Sophia tried to swallow a scream. It lodged in her throat.

She snatched the platter from the waiter and smashed it down on the back of the gunman’s balaclava. Then gave him a push towards the terrified guests. Some of the quicker-thinkers made a grab for the man.

She wished she could stay and help them. Instead she ducked under the archway and ran from the room.

Yells and screams resounded from other rooms, upstairs and down. She sneaked swiftly up the corridor. Peeked around the corner. Three men stood guard in the hall, arms laden with plastic boxes. Even if they didn’t just drop their payloads and switch to weapons, Sophia didn’t rate her chances against them.

She slid back to the nearest door. Listened.

A man sobbed, begging in Greek. A vicious noise, half-hiss half-spit shut him up. Weighty footsteps headed her way.

Sophia bolted for the room opposite. Slipped inside. Found herself in a pink-tiled bathroom. At least she’d die somewhere pretty, she guessed. She pushed the door closed, maybe not soon enough.

She pressed her head to the door. Tensed. Listened.

Her heartbeat hammered in her ear, threatening to give her away.
